  • Description:   Members of the Framingham High School string and jazz ensemble are preparing to play in Russia. Medfield students are creating art works to be shown at a local gallery. And, in Holliston, the school community is bursting with pride over its nomination for a national arts award. For the most part, school arts programs in the western suburbs are flourishing. Music, drawing, dance and drama courses are teeming with eager students, and teachers and administrators say the key to their success is that communities are committed to maintaining art in the classroom. In the early 1980s, when Proposition 2 1/2 ravaged local budgets, school arts programs were among the first items to be cut. And although some cities and towns still trim the arts when budgets are tight, many local communities have worked to improve their programs.
