Chronic processes in depression: differentiating self and other influences in onset, maintenance, and relapse/recurrence
  • Author: Dobson, K
  • Description: Joiner (this issue) identifies erosive and self-propogatory processes in depression. Here I argue that although these processes are important to discuss in the context of depression, and although his presentation offers an excellent starting point for a fulsome discussion of these issues, Joiner's analysis fails to fully develop the literature to the maximum extent possible. Several issues for further theory development are advanced: (1) the definition of chronicity and chronic processes in depression, (2) the definition and use of the concepts of erosive and self-propogatory processes, (3) other factors that deserve attention, and (4) an encouragement for ongoing work emphasizing the multifactorial prediction of depression.
