  • Description: Well, where do we start? To begin with, the rink will be eminently usable during the summer - just not for skating. It's taking the form of an "event oval": a large, oval-shaped concrete pad sitting atop the refrigeration plumbing and right on axis with the steps descending from City Hall plaza. It appears to relate well to the steps and provide a focus to the rest of the Common. It will accommodate café-style seating during normal summer hours and activities of various sorts on special occasions. On paper it appears that it will accommodate both ordinary and extraordinary activities quite well. Imagination is an invaluable commodity in a city that's been hollowed out by disinvestment and suburban flight. Can we actually imagine ourselves with a Common that's bustling with public life - shoppers and vendors and street performers and more? We're only the second-largest city in New England; yes, we can.
