Treating depression as a recurrent or chronic disease
  • Author: Glass, R M
  • Description: The availability of effective treatments for depression emphasizes the importance of identifying all people who suffer from this chronic disease. Tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors have given way to more effective drugs that have fewer side effects. A 1998 study found that nortriptyline and psychotherapy were both more effective than a placebo in preventing depression in a group of older patients. Primary care physicians should screen all patients for the symptoms of depression.
