  • Description:   ART gave "Alcestis" its world premiere during the theater's spring season. Last year, ART produced the American premiere of a section from [Robert Wilson]'s monumental "the CIVIL warS." That work was nominated by the Pulitzer Prize drama jury for a Pulitzer this year, but the board decided not to make an award. The Texas-born writer- director's work is much more widely produced in Europe than in his native land, and ART and the Brooklyn Academy of Music have taken the lead in giving his work exposure here. Wilson has praised ART artistic director Robert Brustein as "absolutely the most engaging, cooperative, insightful artistic director I've ever worked with." "Alcestis," which ART reopens tonight at the Loeb Drama Center, is based on a play by Euripides, and is the first Wilson work to be based on a classical text. East German playwright Heiner Muller and composer-performance artist Laurie Anderson contributed to Wilson's schema. The current run, originally scheduled through July 10, was extended yesterday to include four additional performances, July 11- 12 at 8 p.m. and July 13 at 2 and 8 p.m. One of the the best-known and most accomplished community theater groups in Eastern Massachusetts is the Reagle Players, whose 18th summer season opens July 8 at Waltham Summer Theater with "Dames At Sea." Robert Eagle is producer-director, and the 44 performers for the season's shows are drawn from 21 cities and towns, Haverhill to Worcester (Lexington, with nine actors, leads the way). "Dames at Sea," a spoof of 1940s musicals, starred DickPowell and Ruby Keeler in its original version. In the Reagle Players' edition, those roles will be acted by Glen Michell and Kathleen Clarke.
